Warm a Winter Room with Free Heat!

To save energy and heating costs I don’t turn on my furnace until it’s consistently 40 degrees (F) outside. That makes for some nippy nights when the outdoor temperatures dip down to 40 degrees in the evening. BRRRR!

I put extra blankets on my bed to snuggle under. However, my bedroom has a pitched ceiling. I loved the high ceiling in that room when we bought the house until the first winter - because heat rises.  It is a spendy room to theat and even then it’s still cold.

Reversing the blades on a ceiling fan would do the trick but I don’t have a ceiling fan in that room. Not to worry, I have a free space heater for my bedroom and I bet you do too!

PhotobucketMy bedroom is on the south side of our house. As an experiment, I opened the curtains during the day and let the sun shine in to heat the room with passive solar heat I closed the curtains in that room when I get home from work. That part is very important. You don’t want the warmed air in your room to escape back out the window in the evening because cold air is drawn to warm air and vice versa.

I didn’t expect it work very well given our overcast mid western blah days.

But it did!

The sunlight warmed the floors in my bedroom and that in turn warmed the air. It’s a free solar space heater!

Blitzkrieg enjoys it too.

If you have someone who needs convincing, how about using One Million Acts of Green Facebook application to send them a Gift of Green?

Using passive solar heat allows me to warm up my cold bedroom without using extra resources or driving up my heating bill and the price can't be beat - free!

Do you use passive solar heat?

My bedroom is upstairs and on the south wall. It stays toasty pretty much all the time due to huge windows up there. I have 2 of my 3 kiddos in bedroom with me each night too (the ones who uncover themselves every night - we have a twin bed next to our king) so that we can all share the warmth. The kitchen is also on the south wall , only downstairs, and it stays warm too. Its perfect for keeping my sourdough and kefir warm and active. Passive solar heating rocks!

Works somewhat in my poorly insulated bedroom. I would insulate, but ripping out the drywall and crawling under the house or rather that portion were all the insulation has fallen off would suck. Of course paying higher electric bills sucks more!

actually learned the curtain trick for help keeping cool in the summertime from reading "Love in the Time of Cholera," and it really works. your post reminds me that I have simply GOT to bite the bullet and buy shades for the windows that only have curtains, as another means to keep in that daytime heat during the winter. thanks
